FARO CITY CENTRE TO THE AIRPORT AND FARO BEACH - PROXIMO BUS ROUTE 16

Travelling with a lot of luggage or very large bags? These are ordinary city buses with very little space for huge bags.

Adult cash fare is €2.35 - pay the driver. There is no discount for seniors except residents.

The local Proximo (urban bus) route 16 runs from the Bus Station (outdoor annex) to Aeroporto (Airport) and Praia de Faro. Route diagram and official timetable on the official website here.  Picture of the Próximo station entrance here - note an ATM there. There is a small air-conditoned waiting room with café.

Journey time to the airport is 20 minutes.  Buses used have on board wifi so you do not need to off line for even a moment!!proximo buses

These buses can be VERY busy and crowded. If you must be at the airport at a certain time, I advise being at the stop in Faro bus station 10 minutes at least before the departure time.

Journeys in BOLD type run daily from 1st July until second Sunday in September, for the rest of the year they run on weekdays only. First bus to Faro beach (Praia de Faro) is the 0700. Arrival there is 5 minutes after the airport.

Departures on route 16 DAILY except as noted at : 5:00, 6:00,  7:00, 8:00, 8:30++, 9:00**, 9:30++, 10:10, 10:50, 11:15, 12:00++, 12.15$, 12:50, 13:30, 14:10, 15:05, 15:50, 16:35, 17:45, 18:30, 19:30, 20:00++, 20:40, 21:40++, 22:05, 23:00, 23:45

** Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays only, does not run in summer   ++ Not on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays except in summer ; 1st July - second Sunday in September. $ - Not on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays

If you are unlucky with the bus times, there is a taxi rank at the Bus Station. A Taxi to the airport will cost you about €10.

Buses from the airport also stop outside the Railway Station about 1 minute after leaving the bus station. The stop at the station is across the square to the right as you exit the station, in front of a tall apartment block. However I recommend you walk the 2 minutes to the bus station and board there. At busy times the bus will leave the bus station full and may not stop to pick up on the way.

Buses also stop outside the Forum Algarve shopping centre, across the road for the bus stop for services from Loulé, Quarteira, Vilamoura and Albufeira. If you are tight for time and don't mind crossing a busy road, you can make your connection here. Otherwise your bus takes you into town and some time later your bus to the the airport  will take you back the same way. Buses stop at the Forum Algarve about 5 minutes after leaving the Bus Station.

FARO BEACH AND AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTRE - PROXIMO BUS ROUTE 16

Proximo Bus 16 that is NOT going to Praia de Faro, unless you want to go straight to the beach!.  Destination is normally shown as Terminal or Avenida. The bus stop is outside the Airport terminal Departures area, to the left of the arrivals area as you exit the terminal building, under the concrete roof like structure.

Journey time is about 20 minutes. Journeys in BOLD type run daily from 1st July until the second Sunday in September, otherwise they run on weekdays only.

Buses leave Faro beachh ( Praia de Faro) 5 minutes before the time at the airport, first bus is at 0725. Last bus from Praia de Faro is at 2230.

Departures on route 16 DAILY except as noted at  5:20, 6:20, 7:30, 8:30, 9:05, 9:35++, 10:05, 1045$$, 11:05++, 11.35, 12:05, 12:50$,13:35, 14:00++, 14:30, 15:05, 16:10, 17:10, 18:10, 19:10, 20:00, 20:35++, 21:15,  22:15++, 22:35, 23:20, 00:10.

$$ Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays only ++ Not on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays runs daily in summer if in bold type. $ - Not on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays

Again, if you are unlucky with the bus times there is a taxi rank to the right when you are outside the terminal. A taxi to the train or bus station will cost about €10.

Heading on from Faro?

There are only THREE (started with four earlier this year, obviously too many for the available business) direct buses daily (coaches to UK readers) between Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Faro Airport - information here

Tickets are not sold on any website. At the airport you pay the driver.
At the other places you buy tickets at the bus station ticket office before boarding the bus.

There are also coaches (long distance buses) to and from Huelva and Seville in Spain. For details please see this page.

For journeys to Spain, you CANNOT buy tickets at the airport. You must therefore obtain them on line at the relevant company website before travelling.

For ALL OTHER DESTINATIONS in the Algarve or at other times, go to Faro railway station or Faro bus station (the local buses listed above stop outside both) and then go by train or another bus.

Faro city centre map showing location of bus and rail stations. Diagram of urban bus routes in Faro here - external link.

Please allow plenty of time at Faro bus station when buying a ticket, which you do inside at the ticket office.
You cannot buy train or bus tickets on line for for local journeys in the Algarve.

On arrival at the Faro Bus Terminal from the airport, you must buy your next bus ticket at the ticket window inside the building. Allow at least 10 minutes for this, as queues are often long and there is always someone in front of you with a complex transaction. You CANNOT buy tickets on line for these journeys.

Faro railway station is 150 metres from the bus station in the same street. Buses to and from the airport stop outside the railway station.
