REDE EXPRESSOS AND OTHER LONG DISTANCE BUSES (COACHES) IN PORTUGAL

This page has been created with information taken from printed timetables and checked locally whenever possible. Please check all times at the official website before committing yourself.  I CAN ONLY CHECK THINGS OCCASIONALLY. EACH TIMETABLE HAS THE DATE ON WHICH I WAS LAST ABLE TO CONFIRM DETAILS.

THERE HAVE BEEN NUMBER OF CHANGES TO SOME OF THE REDE-EXPRESSOS TIMETABLES BELOW EFFECTIVE FROM 1st JULY.  THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN SOME SMALL PRICE INCREASES. I HAVE COMPLETED THE UPDATES HERE BUT DO PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK ON THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE WHEN YOU BUY TICKETS. ALSO YOU CAN NOW USE PAYPAL TO BUY TICKETS FROM REDE EXPRESSOS.

Please read! This page summarises some of the long-distance services operated by the Rede Expressos consortium (and a some other companies) from Lisbon and Porto to and from some of the more requested tourist destinations in Portugal. I have many of the current timetable leaflets for Rede-Expressos buses to and from Lisbon, so if there is a place you are looking for that is not included below, please email me with your query. Please however read the whole page and check the websites first, as I do have a real life.

The official website www.rede-expressos.pt should always be consulted to confirm fares and times, especially around public holidays. There is a search engine that will give you point to point timetables and fares, but they do not have downloadable timetables for many routes. The website ticket and timetable sections are available in English** and Portuguese. Other long distance and regional bus companies have their own websites - see below and also here. ** If the replica of the printable timetable comes up, this will be only in Portuguese as to the days that various journeys may or may not operate.

Seat reservations are required for all Rede Expressos services. You can normally reserve on-line up to 30 days ahead of travel at the website, by telephone or at the bus terminals or ticket agents. Be aware that the ticket offices are NOT OPEN 24 hours and that drivers do not sell tickets. Small towns and villages without a bus terminal may have a shop acting a ticket sales agent. Many calls are just a bus stop. If you turn up, with no ticket, at the last moment and the next bus is full, you will be sold a ticket for the first bus on which there is a seat, which might be tomorrow!

FRIDAYS, SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS

These are very busy times on all the long distance bus systems. Where reservations are available, you are strongly advised to have one! On many routes there are extra buses on Fridays and Sundays during the University and College term time, which is from the second Monday in September until the 30th June. I cannot show all these in the time tables below, but they will be available on the official websites. All long distance routes are subject to alteration around major holidays eg Christmas, New Year and Easter. It is impossible for me to include these variations here. Intending travellers should especially be aware that :

A list of Rede-Expressos ticket offices and sales agents can be found on their site, click Postos de Venda or Points of Sale on their home page and then choose the place you need from the list.

If you are making a long journey and do not have a ticket, be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before your actual or buy a ticket on line. With RENEX, if you have reserved by phone, you MUST collect your reservation at least 30 minutes before departure or it will be cancelled. RENEX does NOT have on line ticket purchase facilities.

To confirm exact times on your day of departure your best bet is to call the relevant bus company call centre. Be advised that they may employ contact centre software on their phone lines. You may need to answer several automated questions before getting the information needed. This process may only be in Portuguese.

Rede - Expressos call centre number is 707 22 33 44 available 0800 - 2100 daily. For Renex, details on this page or, if you are in the Algarve, call free 800 224 220.

The Rede-Expressso and Renex ticketing systems allow you to book a through ticket from just about anywhere to anywhere else. Any change of bus required (always in Lisbon if that's on your route) is clearly indicated. Don't forget that Lisbon is 'LISBOA' in Portuguese.

As a VERY rough indication of the cost, an hour's ride with Rede Expressos will cost you €7.00, but the longer the journey, the cheaper it gets. Rede-Expressos is a group of several operators, so your bus may have a different company name on it.

LISBON BUS TERMINALS AND COMPANIES

The REDE EXPRESSOS buses on this page run from and to the LISBON SETE RIOS bus terminal. This is three miles/5km from the city centre, but is well served by city buses (www.carris.pt for details), the Metro (Jardim Zoologico station; www.metrolisboa.pt for details) and by suburban trains to Sete Rios station (www.cp.pt Urbanos Lisboa). In all cases allow at least 20 minutes to make your connection, as it is a bit of a maze around there. If you are arriving at Sete Rios and need a taxi, there is a taxi rank to the left of the exit.

RENEX another national long-distance operator, website www.renex.pt uses the LISBON GARE ORIENTE terminal, which is next to the railway and metro stations of the same name. This is about 5.75 miles/ 9.0km from the city centre but the closer to the airport. Note also that, in many towns and villages, RENEX has different ticket offices and stopping places. Renex links Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve as an alternative to Rede-Expressos. The RENEX website is only in Portugese. Reservations are also strongly recommended for all RENEX services.

Rodoviario do Tejo is a regional operator (website www.rodotejo.pt) whose 'rapidas' buses run to and from LISBON CAMPO GRANDE, which is next to the Metro station of the same name and about 4.5 miles/ 7.3km from the city centre. Their bus stops are outside the main area of the bus terminal - they are next to a 16-storey apartment block. There is allegedly a ticket office by the Metro station entrance, which I have never noticed. You can buy your tickets on the bus.

A few other bus companies are mentioned in the timetables below as required. For a longer list of regional bus operators in Portugal, click here.

ARRIVING AT LISBON AIRPORT - GETTING TO A BUS TERMINAL

NONE of the national long distance bus companies serve Lisbon Airport. You will need to make your way to the appropriate bus terminal. Approximate distances from the airport to the bus terminals - Campo Grande 2.1 miles/3.3km , Oriente 1.8 miles/2.9km; Sete Rios 5.7miles/9.2km. Taxis are readily available at the airport should you not wish to use metro (underground) train or bus.

You can take a bus or the Metro (subway) from the airport across town to Oriente or Sete Rios. The Metro runs every few minutes from 6am to 1am daily and will take you to Oriente in about 7 minutes and Jardim Zoologico (for the Sete Rios terminal) in about 25 minutes. Tickets are €1.90 for any journey, which includes 50 cents for the rechargeable ticket card.

Carris city bus 744 will take you to Gare Oriente; Aerobus 2** goes to the Sete Rios bus terminal. The Aerobus routes are operated by special buses of Yellowbus Tours and are not part of the city bus network.  Aerobus tickets cost €3,15 and include travel on city buses for the same day. Full details including route maps at http://www.yellowbustours.com/en/cities/lisbon/airport-transport/ Cash fare on Carris buses is €1,80 for any journey.

** Observed November 2013 that the buses used on Aerobus 2 still show the old route 96 number on the front. The stop at Sete Rios is inside the long distance bus terminal.

There is no practicable route by metro and no direct bus link between the airport and Campo Grande Norte for the bus terminal there. Bus 783 from the airport, direction Amoreiras, stops approx. 850 metres from the Campo Grande terminal. Lisbon city bus maps and times are at www.carris.pt

LISBON  <> ALBUFEIRA

There are 12 -15 daily Rede - Expressos buses between Lisbon and Albufeira - some are not shown in the timetables below. Check www.rede-expressos.pt or visit the bus offices. One-way fare is either €19.50 or €20.00, according to which route it takes. Some journeys operated by EVA Mundial Turismo also stop in Albufeira old town centre (Albufeira Centro) in the Avenida da Liberdade. Please check times on line at www.eva-bus.com or at the ticket office in Albufeira Bus Terminal, open from 0630hrs except Sundays and Holidays (0730hrs) closes at 2030hrs or the 'Bus Shop' ticket office in Avenida Liberdade which closes at 2000hrs.

RENEX (www.renex.pt) also run frequent daily journeys between Lisbon, Albufeira and most of the Algarve. They have printable timetables on their website, unlike Rede Expressos. Their site is in Portuguese only. Look for 'Horarios'. NB RENEX use the GARE ORIENTE bus terminal in Lisbon. They run connections to and from the old town centre of Albufeira from the remote bus terminal they use here. RENEX does not have on line ticket sales.

PLEASE DO DOUBLE CHECK TIMES ON THE OFFICIAL WEBSITES BEFORE MAKING FIRM TRAVEL PLANS AS THEY CAN CHANGE WITHOUT WARNING

THESE JOURNEYS DO NOT CARRY PASSENGERS WITHIN THE ALGARVE - ONLY TO AND FROM LISBON AND BEYOND

Notes : G - on Sundays only unless Monday is a holiday in which case runs on the MONDAY instead.
Note : Peniche Bus terminal is a bleak facility located in an industrial area about 1/2 mile (800 metres) from town. All inbound buses also stop at the 'Tribunal' just outside the town centre. However you cannot board an outbound bus here without a ticket.
The RODOTEJO bus company also runs buses 'Rapida Azul' between Lisbon CAMPO GRANDE and PENICHE via almost the same route, but not serving Torres Vedras. This is essentially a weekday commuter service. There are only three buses each way on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. Timetable here. One way fare Lisbon - Peniche is €8,30 and you pay cash. Reservation not possible. There is also a very frequent fast daily service between Lisbon Campo Grande and Torres Vedras operated by Barraqueiro - times here. Buses every 7 - 12 minutes during weekday rush hours, every 30 minutes at other times on weekdays, once each hour at weekends.
Peniche also has a limited direct service of buses from Porto via Caldas da Rainha - see the Rede-Expressos website for details.

LISBON <> ÓBIDOS <> CALDAS DA RAINHA by Rodoviária do Tejo 'RAPIDA VERDE'

Logo rodotejo

Checked and updated 2nd September 2014.
These buses run from and to Campo Grande, about 5 miles/8km from Lisbon city centre, next to the metro station of the same name. These are NOT part of the Rede-Expressos network.

One way fare from Lisbon to Òbidos is €7.60, Caldas da Rainha €7,70
The ticket office in Campo Grande, Lisbon, is allegedly next to the Metro station entrance but I never saw it. You can pay the driver.
The stop at CAMPO GRANDE is in Rua Actor António Silva. Buses are operated by www.rodotejo.pt - a printable timetable is here. Buses take just over an hour to reach Obidos and ten minutes more to get to Caldas da Rainha. Some journeys start from or continue to Alcobaça or Nazaré - see the timetable for details.

On weekdays, there are buses about once every hour (every 15 minutes at peak times). There are eleven buses each way on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays at intervals of about every 90 minutes.
The same company operates local buses for the ten minute journey between Obidos and Caldas da Rainha - for times look under 'INTERURBANAS' on www.rodotejo.pt but be aware that local buses are very infrequent at weekends and virtually non-existent on public holidays.

Buses operated by the MAFRENSE company leave from the Campo Grande Bus terminal in Lisbon. This is to the north of the city centre, next to the metro station of the same name. Full timetables at www.mafrense.pt Buses leave from stand 4 or 5 at the bus terminal. Buses operated by the Mafrense company do not have route / line numbers, so make sure you get on the right one!
